Place in the world
Gena’s advertisement gives him a way to approach another lonely person. Cheburashka is shy and literal-minded, yet willing to help: he joins the construction of the House of Friendship, makes a playground and tries to learn. His story values belonging before usefulness or a recognised species.
He helps strangers, carries heavy materials and tries to correct injustice. Yet he is not infallible: the films let him misunderstand children, struggle with travel and need Shapoklyak’s help. His birthday song belongs to the 1971 film, while the train song appears in the 1974 holiday adventure.
