Gena’s Holiday
Отпуск крокодила Гены
Story through the endingChildren’s letter about a polluted river reaches Gena through the magazine Krokodil. Gena and Cheburashka leave on holiday, but Shapoklyak steals their tickets and wallet and they are put off the train. They encounter careless tourists, a trap and illegal fishers. Gena rescues Shapoklyak; the friends confiscate fishing nets. She returns the tickets and joins their environmental efforts.
Story & key events
Plot details and spoilers ahead.
The black river leads them to factory waste. They persuade the director to treat it and involve the troublesome tourists in building a settling tank. The river recovers and the children write again. Gena hopes to save another river on each future holiday before continuing south. The 1993 prose story differs in detail and ending from the 1974 film; a 1974 play co-authored with Roman Kachanov is a related dramatic version, not a reprint of the later prose.
A new cover, illustrator, reading exercise or abridged extract is not automatically a new story. This catalogue groups reprints under their underlying work. Dates preceded by ≤ establish that a text was available by that year; they do not claim a verified first publication.
Place in the world
The books are the first branch of the world, beginning with Eduard Uspensky’s 1966 story. People and speaking animals work, rent homes and make friends in the same town. Later texts range from gentle children’s adventures to satire about business, bureaucracy and crime; they do not form one seamless screen chronology.
Keep five shelves separate: the books, Soviet puppet films, Japanese adaptations, new Russian animation and live action. Names and images travel between them, but events do not automatically transfer. A crocodile employee, a human grandfather and a bureau founder can be related interpretations without sharing a single life.
