Cheburashka Goes to School

Чебурашка идёт в школу

Story through the ending

Gena returns from a trip, expecting Cheburashka to meet him. The little friend missed the message because he cannot read. With the school year about to begin, Gena decides that they should study. Shopping for a uniform and discovering the state of the school turn the wish to learn into a practical obstacle course.

Story & key events

Plot details and spoilers ahead.

The school is not ready: repairs and staffing problems threaten the opening. Shapoklyak applies her tricks to the repair workers instead of blocking the friends’ education. The prospect of school is restored, and even the old lady intends to learn. The cycle ends with friendship leading to literacy and a place in public life.

Place in the world

Gena’s advertisement gives him a way to approach another lonely person. Cheburashka is shy and literal-minded, yet willing to help: he joins the construction of the House of Friendship, makes a playground and tries to learn. His story values belonging before usefulness or a recognised species.

In the first story she disrupts the building of the House of Friendship; the friends eventually send her away with balloons. In the holiday film she first steals tickets, then joins the stranded friends against poachers and pollution. At school she channels her cunning into securing repairs. These reversals matter more than a simple good-versus-evil label.
